No luck, LuckMC11 thanks for the suggestion though. I'm thinking maybe there's a problem in the registry after having removed and reinstalled so many times now - but I still find messing with the registry intimidating and don't want to screw anything else up. Unfortunately, it's getting to the point...

Yes. All the games are patched to current: 1.11 for AA, 2.15 for Spearhead and 2.40b for Breakthrough - but the expansions still don't run. Again, all I did was swap the monitors - my CPU is the same and I never had this issue when I was using the CRT.
