For what it's worth, Steam lets you download and backup the installation files to hardcopy. I have all my steam games sitting on discs.
aren't those hard copies with steam online checks built-in ?

I fully agree with most of your points about planned obsolescence. And yes some games require steam checks, the beauty of the PC though is that there will always be a way around such things. Much like I had to do with commander keen.

Anybody remembers Starforce? That DRM thing that prevented even legally bought games to be played?

actually Starforce was just very customizable and that was the problem
depending on the editor's will, the overall "strength" of the protection could be set way too high and therefore present the problem that you point out
however some starforce games were more lenient & therefore posed less problems if at all ...

some securom 7 games present problems to a small % of users too btw
