Some Call of Duty enthusiasts, for example, have ended up on hacked servers and had all their stats wiped, which if you’re a fan of the game, will send a cold shiver down your spine.

It is like Battle.net for consoles.

I'm not too surprised by this. There was a different article saying that the blame for this mess was on the PS3 platform itself. I find it to be a load of crap and quite laughable. Sure the system is now considered "broken" by those who want to prevent piracy, but that doesn't mean everything ends there. The problem with how CoD4 and MW2 are set up is that they're using a P2P network. Black Ops not affected? It's only a matter of time before that becomes broken too.

I say Infinity Ward had it coming to them anyway. Just goes to show that their P2P setup should not be used on MP games. Best way to play should be a client-server modal. One can do a program or file checking system to determine if any of the files are changed or modified. But that can only go so far. There are plenty of methods to tackle this. I wonder if using PGP/GPG encryption methodology for encrypting the executable or certain contents of the game files can be used to fix this.

Black Ops has been effected, I visited a friends place only 4 days ago where he loaded the game to show me, only to find that when he joined the server his entire load out was changed, his name prefixed with the word c**t, items where a different colour and stats reset, so its not just MW2.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20110120/tc_pcworld/issonyplanningtothwartps3pirateswithblurayserialkeys

Citing "a very reliable source," the site outlines a new serial-key authentication process whereby Blu-ray disc games would be paired to PlayStation 3 units, authenticating against Sony's servers. The site adds that each serial key would only be usable up to five times.

Such a move may seem too painful for Sony to consider with any seriousness, but the benefits for the company may outweigh the complaints. Not only would it introduce a new form of protection against piracy, it would also tie a game to a single console or user account. That in turn would mean no game trade-ins and no game rentals.

If consoles start using CD-keys, they will lose popularity. Especially if it gets hard-locked to one console. I could understand a 'if the same key logs in to PSN/XBL twice, both get kicked and get an e-mail asking them to prove they have the legit copy' but a hard lock to one console? It's bad enough that PC gamers are already treated like they were scum.

With the kind of access that they have to the system now this will simply be a mild inconvenience for pirates and a huge... well lets just say pain in the ass for honest consumers.

If this actually happens, I'm sure it might protect the first game really quite well, Once the pirates get that cracked though, the next games will just fall in line.

:doh Wonder what happens when the console dies and needs to be RMA'd for a replacement, bang goes ones games collection... although the PS3 is more reliable than the xbox, it is well known for the xbox to RROD, and I have a friend whom has had to get his PS3 replaced before now after it bricked its self after an online update.
