You should be able to select 'aspect ratio' or somthing like that in options, set it to 16:10, and the 16:10 ratio resolutions will become available.

There are already some threads on this, and I don't own HL2, so look at them, too.

I just bought this new dell computer with the FX6800GTO video card and I wanted to play HL2 (and other games) at the 16:10 aspect. I realized I couldnt set XP to 1680 X 1050 resolution. Dont bother calling tech support they dont know anything. Here is how i got it to work....

1. Download and use rivatuner (http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner)

2. Run program and under the "Target Adapter" group box click the little customize button. Select the second icon from the left (tool tips says, "low-level refresh rate settings")

3. It will promt you saying that the EDID doesnt match the monitors screen resolution and asks you if you wish to ignore the max resolution stored in the EDID. Select yes.

4. Click the Get EDID info button and then change the maximum display resolution to 1680 x 1050 (should say 1280 x 1024). Finally hit the create button and name the file.

5. go to your display properties -> settings and click the advanced button and click the advanced button

6. select the adapter tab and click the update driver button. Update the driver from a specific location and select the rivatuner install directory

7. reboot the computer and go back to the advanced display properties. Click the adapter tab and click the List All Modes... button. Select the 1680 X 1050 resolution.

As a final note, ive done this with both the 66.93 WHQL drivers and the 70.90 beta drivers

alternatively just make sure you install the monitor INF file that came on the CD and Windows will allow you to select all the appropriate resolutions.

Don'y know why people always try the most complex solutions first :-)

for the dell 2005fpw i tried the disk that came with it, and downloading all the drivers and support files dell had to offer, unfortunatly the highest resolution i could pull up was 1600 x 1024 ... 16:9 aspect. Im pretty new to this widescreen stuff, and tech support at dell was a joke. The way I posted above was the only way i could get the 1680 x 1050 (16:10 aspect). If there is an easier way than what i had to do, or some place to download a good driver, let me know, but there was nothing on the dell disk or website. I should have been more clear in my other post that i was working with the dell 2005fpw

Strange, all I did was plug in the new monitor, let it detect new hardware, and I was able to get 1680x1050 without tweaking anything. For good measure, I updated the monitor driver just in case.

Of course, I have an ATi X800XT PE and not an NV 6800, but it should work the same.

FWIW: I have both an FX6600GT and an FX6800GT and both systems detected and used the 2005FPW in HL2 just fine. I did use the included inf file and restarted and then Windows and all DX9 games used the proper resolution.

Same here. Everything worked right out of the box in HL2 with my new 2005.

It's amazing to me how one person can find that XP quickly and easily detects things whereas others find that it just won't work without extra hacking.

Once that starts happening it's probably best to do a reinstall.

:(
