I too as you, feel that it should be directly connected to resolution. (As I thought when they say widescreen ootb meant) and that was, what was making it hard for me to understand. Your post was very insightful.
As for people considering it cheating. I say no more than someone who has a much better video card, ram, system, etc would be considered cheating. Afterall, all those are giving them an edge as well.
I just want the game to display as it should on "my" monitor, in the correct aspect ratio. Much as I am sure anyone would want.
I think it was good of Epic to at least include it, altho not linked as it should be. I would hope in the coming months, and years, companies will link it to the resolution. I am quite sure the PC community as a whole is heading towards the widescreen form.
