Well, at least 3 of the biggest games from the last couple years have this effect (whether in widescreen or not), so it's certainly not unusual.

Unusual? No. Normal? No. Just because the 3 biggest games out now have wrong FoV, doesn't make it normal or correct. Actually, Doom 3 and Quake 4 have the correct FoV if you edit the config file properly, but then you might not count those two as "biggest".

I have done the config hack... However, how do I know the game is actually being displayed in 1680X1050? If I go to check it in the options, I see all the same ones as before.

Well I never said it was "correct." But if the biggest games do it, yes it is normal. Personally it doesn't bother me, changing the fov doesn't look any more correct to my eyes.

Well.. whether or not it's filling your widescreen monitor is usually a good hint :P If you had to use a config hack to change the resolution, you can be pretty sure it's not going to appear in the menus. If for some reason you can't tell just by looking at it (in which case why does it matter anyway), take a screenshot with the print screen key and paste it into MS Paint or something.

When trying to play at 1920 x 1200 the game was severely laggy. I reduced the rez to 1600 x 1200 and it played just fine. Is anyone else having trouble at 1920 x 1200?

Yes, the wider towards the edge of the screen (aka fisheye lens effect) is called "not the correct Field of Vision". It is not normal. Games that allow FoV to be changed do not have Mini-me's running around to the left and right of you.

thats not a fisheye effect.
a fisheye, has a 180 degree angle of view usually, and is circular.
this is the effect you get with extremely wide angles on cameras, when the view is rectalinear, like a 14 mm SLR lense would be.

the rectalinear effects at the edge of the screen are normal for extremely wide angle camera shots...
strange that they would not fix this on a computer though.

How do you change rez in FEAR demo?
I tried editing my settings.cfg, and the autoexec.cfg file, but
nothing works. I'm always at what ever is shown on
the in-game rez screen.

@ kilmar ... please show us a screenshot or two ...
I honestly don't mean to be rude but I can't make head nor tail of what you are talking about.

@ Cabezone ...
None of the other widescreen games I've played have any distortion at the edges.

What other games ? ... name 3

@ roller11 ... sorry to be so blunt ... (and it could be you haven't explained your problem well) ... but read the thread ... top of page 2

F.E.A.R. DEMO VERSION WIDESCREEN HACK

You must start the game one time then save & exit & go into:

The file is found
My Computer > right mouse click > choose Explore > then go to
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsMonolith ProductionsFEAR

The file is named settings.cfg & is a size of 46kb open it with notepad or a suitable editor program &

then you scroll down until you see the following & this is where you change the setings to your requirements
then resave the file in the same folder.

(I changed it to 1920 X 1200)

"GammaB" "1.973183"
"GammaG" "1.973183"
"GammaR" "1.973183"
"BitDepth" "32"
"HardwareCursor" "1.000000"
"ScreenWidth" "1920"
"VSyncOnFlip" "1.000000"
"ScreenHeight" "1200"

THEN

If you go into the game and choose ... Options ... Display ... it will show up as 640x480 and then re-set it's self to this res. (So don't go into this option.)

If you go into the game and choose
... Options ... Performance ... Advanced Video Card Options ... Graphics ... it should show the 1920x1200 res in there ... second from
bottom.

Also with posts from: fenix2k & Paddy the Wak
