Hey
consolejoker ... welcome to the forum ...
Your first post here and you do is moan ... not the best way to get help ...

Dude, did you read what he said? These solutions do not work. I tried them as well, this stupid thread, or at least the first post which purports to offer 1680x1050, does not work. No such option shows up in the video resolution screen.
I don't get it, why do people keep posting this link?
The second post explained why he might be having problems with the patch and it's bad widescreen support it then went on to suggest that asse9 do a search for the files to replace that enable the resolution he wants ...
All I did was provide that link for him ... so he didn't have to do that search ...
If you have come here to the WSGF looking help we will try to do just that if you come here with the attitude you seem to have you won't get very far.
I notice that you say the files aren't working for you but you didn't say what is happening or not as the case may be so how can you be helped ?
You then go on to say actually you only tried the first one ... but not the second ... yet you call the thread stupid.
Just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean that it doesn't work for others and with that said it suggests is most likely the case that
you are doing something wrong.
@
Pikey1969 ... Welcome to you too ... :D
What you are describing usually happens if you use a resolution that your screen can't do.
Can you run your desktop at those resolutions ?
