What do games like Quake 2 do when it doesn't have a widescreen res?

Are we capable of running them in their normal 4x3 (or whatever resolution) on the widescreen monitor with black bars, and how do they look?

For exmaple what happens if I try to run quake 2 at 1152x768 on a widescreen LCD?

Thanks,
ELmO

There was a custom compiled Quake 2 executable available on the forum at one time. I think it's still on... do a search for 'quake 2 widescreen'. It's the 3.20 patch .exe, so make sure you've got that patch version.

Remember, the Quake 2 source is available as a free download now from id, so if you've got any coding/compilation experience, you can make your own executable.

Thanks dawg I'll take a look, and yes I have coding experience - even with quake 2 code. For my senior year CSE project 2 years ago I did a quake 2 engine in C++ that loaded maps via BSP trees, it ran about half the speed that it should have (and had no hit detection, only fly around, and lighting wasnt fully supported) - but it still worked. Hopefully I won't have to delve too far to find someone else supporting widescreen =).

I think it's literally just edit a few bits, and the new res's are ready to play.

Of course, the HUD stretches, but we can't have everything... ;)

WE NEED TO HAVE EVERYTHING. WHAT IF HTE STRETCHED HUD MAKES ME LOSE IN ROCKET ARENA 2? I CANNOT HAVE THAT - I WILL PLAY 24/7 UNTIL I GET USED TO THE STRETCHED HUD.

OTHER THAN THAT, GAME SHOULD LOOK FINE BUT IN WIDESCREEN?

Oh the problem...I have to use "nocheat.exe" to play quake 2 or they won't let me in servers.

Argh,
ELmO

Went a little crazy, then remembered have to use nocheat.exe or I cannot connect to a rocket arena 2 server.

Unfortunate. :(

I don't play online an awful lot. I honestly don't have the time. Last time I played online was years ago. ;) I'm probably so bad by now I'd just be cannon fodder.

No need for a modified .exe, just put these three lines in your autoexec.cfg

set r_customheight "1050"
set r_customwidth "1680"
set r_mode "-1"

...using your own resolution, and also this line should be added there as well...

set fov "??"

...using this guide to set the ?? numbers correctly. With the res I used it would be 100.3888578

P.S. This works online even with nocheat.
