Hi here is my specs, and hope you guys can help me out:

Monitor - Dell 24" LCD
Computer - Dell 9150
Cpu - Intel Dual 2.8
Ram - 2.5gig
Video card - Nvidia 6800, and 7600 GS

When I had the stock ATI X300 SE video card installed using DVI, I get all the low and high widescreen resolutions in Counter Strike Source and Reg Counter Strike. VGA seems to get all the resoltions, but not DVI.When using either EVGA Nvidia 7600 GS or 6800 video card, and I seem to be getting only 1600x900 resolution for 16:9. On 16:10 I get to pick 2 resolutions 1680x1050 or 1920x1200. Is there a way for me to get the the widescreen resolution under 1600x900?

This is what I have done so far on trying to get the other options and still does not work.
1. Unistall/install Old, New, and Modded Drivers.
2. Added Custom Resolutions in the Nvidia Control panel.
3. Check/Uncheck the HDTV options.

I found a way to get those resolution options on Counter Strike, but I have to do something really weird. I gotta plug both VGA and DVI in the card and to the monitor. I have to set in the Display for Clone, and set VGA as the Primary. When I do that, I get all the resolutions on Counter Strike.
****BUT I lose video picture on video files such as mpeg, avi, etc..*****
It's not a codec issue either, cause all players has sound but no picture. When only the DVI is plugged in I get the picture back on my video, but I lose all the resolutions on my games. I tried both of my Nvidia cards and its the same, but my weak ATI x300 (no longer have the card) worked. I know VGA works, and the whole point is for DVI to work, so please help me solve this problem.

Thanks for any tips or advice in advance...

Why not play at 1680*1050 or 1920*1200? More pixels => better headshot aiming potential. I get good framerates at 1680*1050 with my GeForce 6800GT. Make sure you keep HDR off, though.

Ya I know, but on some maps the fps drops really bad when there are tons of flash and smoke bombs used. I would go from 80 something fps down to 20 to 30 fps. I prefer at a lower resolution, so that I don't get that slight lag. Did you get all the resolution setting on your computer from lowest to highest? If you are, what size and type of widescreen monitor are you using? I just want to figure out if its the monitor, the videocard, counter strike, or my computer is causing this.

I've got a Dell 2005FPW, and 1680*1050 is the only 16:10 resolution the Source engine lets me select. It's also the only 16:10 Windows resolution I've got. I'm not sure if one can add 1280*800 manually to this monitor by hacking around on the drivers, it might be possible.

Thanks for letting me know, cause I thought there was something wrong with my CS. The reason why I asked this question is cause my old ATI X300SE that came with the Dell allowed me to pick most of the resolutions on widescrenn 16:9 and 16:10. So I guess on Nvidia cards, I am able to pick most of the resolutions when I am on VGA mode. When on DVI, I guess Counter Strike detect the best resolution for your card to use on DVI. Sucks tho, cause the resolutions are sort of high for my videocard, i found it smoother on on resoluton lower, but I can choose it, so I have to play on 1600x900. Thanks for the info again.

There is an easy way to add your own res when you have a nvidia card. No "hacking" required. Just go to your nvidia display options(rightclick desktop>properties>settings>advanced/rightclick desktop>nvidia display>your screen) and choose the Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates and then click ADD and then type whatever res you want.

All 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 res you can choose in windows will be availible in cs:s.

I have this same problem as I bought Viewsonic VX2025WM. Only resolution for widescreen in CS:S is 1650x1024 which is native resolution. I tried your solution at the Nvidia control panel but it won't let me add any custom resolutions. It just says "The custom resolution cannot be added." Nice message again from XP...it would be NICE to know why those custom resolutions can't be added ?

Sorry to bring up such an old thread but I'm wanting to play in 1600x900 windowed.

My current native is 1680x1050.

In my old rig the 7900GT used to do it fine but with this card, doesn't seem to work.

Probably the problem is that your windows don't have that resolution, can you check that? Otherwise i dunno.

If you're using some of the more recent drivers the custom resolutions seem absent or broken.

That's the only way I've gotten custom resolutions to work in Vista so far, although you don't actually need to edit the inf. The same key is in the registry at HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlVideo[some guid][monitor number]NV_Modes . Add your resolutions in and it should work after a reboot.
