I've recently bought myself a new widescreen monitor but I'm having some trouble with it. Before I even get to games, I want XP to look nice and proper, but I keep getting some sort of problem with every resolution I select. The only one that works properly is the recommended resolution, 1680 x 1050, but I simply can't see anything at that setting.

I'm trying to run it at 1280 x 720 but I keep getting a slight vertical stretch at that setting. Is there anyway to fix this?

You get a strech at 1280x720 because 1680x1050 is a 16:10 res while 1280x720 is a 16:9 res; they have different aspect ratios. The proper resolution to use in this case is 1280x800.

1280 x 800 makes my task bar go below the edge of the screen. But the icons don't stretch so if I can get windows to show the task bar that would be good. Any suggestions?

Edit: 1280 x 800 isn't an option on my resolution selector anymore  .

Are you using a VGA cable? If so, you should be using a DVI cable.

No, I'm using a DVI cable. But, I think I just needed to get used to this new setup. It doesn't seem to be bothering me anymore.

Now for the games...

What's your video card? Depending on your video card, you should be able to configure it so that custom resolutions don't stretch or have other problems.

Im assuming you say you cant see anything at the native res due to small font/text and small icons??

you can go into your display properties and increase icon size and text size and stuff there to make it look just like it used too, but with the higher resolution.

My boss lowers the res on this computer at work all the time because he cant see the smaller font and it drives me nuts.

holding controll and using the mouse scroll wheel also acts like a zoom feature in internet explorer and can increase the size of text and things.

I know how you feel tho, when I come to work after my weekend off this 17" monitor running 12x10 kinda makes me squint my eyes abit even tho I run 1920x1080 at hom its a 37" screen so the font and graphics are actually much bigger. its gonna be great for me when i start going blind :P
