Post subject:  AIMING ISSUES IN HL2DM AND TF2 IN 16:10 FORMAT

Just wondered if anyone else has come across this.. In 4:3 format my aim is spot on and when firing at a wall it will hit the centre of the xhair. but when I play in 16:10 (1920 x 1200 res) it shoots a good 2inches down and to the right ofthe xhair.

see link below for an example pic. I thought I was going mad as from moving from crt to my 24" mon I couldnt hit anyone and couldnt work it out but looks like the aiming is out.

Any help pls.

Hm.

Have you tried the official forums? Usually if one person has an issue, others will too.

Make sure game auto-updates.

Have you tried other 16:10 resolutions? Or even some 16:9?

Try deleting your .cfg files?

Then again you could always try a re-install while your 24" is hooked up.

OR get your Steam client to re-check the data.
(sorry, i forget how do do that)

Thanks I will check out steam and tf2 forums. I have tried reinstalling and infact reinstalled windows recently to but didnt seem to make a difference. I don't think anyone else is having this issue so it does seem to be local issue but be buggered if I can work out why.

Perhaps it's a video driver issue, had you tried older version?

Either way, this problem led you t this site, and being a widescreen user, it's a good thing in teh end.

Please let us knwo if you find a solution.

Thanks Mikeh,

Driver issue is a good theory, Don't know why I hadn't thought of that myself. I will rollback to some drivers I know that was good and let you guys know how I got on.

Also, the Doc's syringe gun probably is not the best test weapon. It has a built in 'bullet drop' that requires arching your shots when hitting something more than a few meters away. You may just be of horizontally, and not both vertically and horizontally.

You are right on this mate, I did a few more tests and found that other weapons are jsut horizontally off not vertically. I did change the FOV from 90 to 75 which did actually help but after playing games at 90 + FOV for many many years I can't go down to 75.

Unfortunately the rolling back drivers did not help. No one seems to be having this prob from the other fourms I have posted on so I will let you know how it goes.

It sounds like your interface (the non-3d part) is not getting the fov change. Did you change any obscure settings in a config file somewhere that you may have just forgotten about?

Edit:
Just saw this in the OP:

moving from crt to my 24" mon

Questions:
1) Are you still using your VGA connection (the blue one that your crt was hooked up to) or did you switch to DVI (the white one) when you hooked up the lcd?

2) If you are still using VGA, did windows pick up the monitor change? you can tell this from the list of available resolutions in the display options. The list should be rather limited in its number of options with the new monitor compared to what it was with the CRT.

3) If windows sees it, does TF2? Do you have to change the aspect ratio option in the TF2 settings to list the different 16:10, 16:9 and 4:3 resolutions, or does it list all of the 16:10, 16:9 and 4:3 resolutions together?

4) Do any of the other Source engine games (Half Life 2, Portal) do this?

Also, where did you change your FOV? I've never seen (or needed) an option like that in any Source engine game, aside from the console.

TF2 has an FOV slider in its advanced video settings menu. No other Source game has that, AFAIK.
