I'm curious, how is support for this res in general? I've been wanting to replace my really outdated 17" LCD 16:10 with a crappy contrast ratio and response time for awhile and I've been looking at the 1600x900 res LCDs. But looking through most widescreen reports it seems info on this res is very incomplete. Not really sure if I want to make the jump to 1920x1080p, don't want to lose too much performance :P

If a game supports any 16:9 resolution, chances are it supports all of them, especially a 'non-extreme' res like 1600x900. There aren't many 1600x900 monitors out there, that's why we don't test this res specifically I think, but as a rule of thumb if 16:9 is supported i.e the game runs at 720p, 1080p, 1360x768... then 1600x900 should work just fine, too.
(This is not just theoretical, I use 1600x900 as one of my custom res's and have yet to find a game that has problems with it) ;)

I'm using a 20" 1600x900 that I got a couple weeks back, have yet to run into any trouble with that res on modern games, most just seem to have 1600x900 there as an option once you're using that hardware. Obviously since I don't have access to a monitor larger than 20" I can't tell if a game supports resolutions higher than that but I suspect that if a game lists 1080p or higher in its support that it'll support anything lower as well.

That is to say, I have several games that didn't list 1600x900 as an available res -until- this display was connected, then the res became available, so I think most modern games just go up to whatever the highest native resolution they can find hardware for is, if thats 1280x800 then that'll be the highest resolution available, connect a larger screen, it'll probably make others available.
