I really don't want to read through 13 pages of post.

once again: DID ANYONE ACTUALLY TRIED IT WITH A PASSIVE ADAPTER?

YES.

dazboots has. It works via passive adaptor for one screen, but plug in other screens to the DVI ports and it apparently stops working.

the dp adapter doesnt strictly stop working on mine, but you can only choose 2 out of the 3 screens to extend your desktop

same with hdmi + 2 dvi, you can only have 2 out of the 3 extended and you need to have them all extended before you can group them together as one screen

Does one on DVI, one on HDMI and one on DP adaptor work? Or is that a no-go too? (That then gives two possible DVI ports for the DVI cable to go on, so try both...)

this is really big dudu for us..

dazboots

ndh

(soon to be me here)

wont have working eyefinitys unless:

a. active DP to DVI adapter (not 100% garaunteed)
b. swap 1 of 3 monitors for a DP monitor.
c. jump off a cliff (in heaven u can have a million displays)

a. and b. will still cost more $$$ ontop of the $400 card,
and c. is too easy.. not quite ready for a million displays.

nope fraid not,

also i just put the 4350 back in as a second card and tried every combo of adaptors / dvis / hdmis etc over both cards

i can extended etc over the 4 screens i have available, but you can only eyefinity group on 2 of the screens , if theres only 1 screen attached to the 5870 then the group option disapears

There was a clip posted today on youtube with an Eyefinity setup. The poster there also confirmed it does not work with a simple DP > DVI adapter.

Did ATI really think this through? Or is it a conspiracy with the screen manufacturers to push DP development ahead? ;)

I highly doubt that, considering that DP has been out for a few years now. If there was a concerted effort by screen manufacturers to push DP, every single display out there would have DVI, HDMI AND DP on them. You don't force adoption of a format by excluding others. There is almost nothing that uses it except Apple.

I wonder if this thing works

http://www.hdtvsupply.com/displayport-to-dvi-adapter.html

only $40 compared to other ones.

from the description:

This simple and cost effective adapter will take your displayport signal and allow you view it on a DVI-D display. Because active electronics are involved the conversion is perfect and meets all of DVI's and DisplayPort's standards.

I think they're lieing to us about the active adapter there. One of you guys willing to buy it and test it out anyways? That definitely doesn't look like an active adapter. For one, there is nothing powering a transcoder in that cable. All active transcoder adapters I've seen (the Apple and the Dell) are powered off of a USB port.

resolutions up to 1080p.

Supports HDTV Resolutions up to 1080p and 1920x1200 Computers Resolution

Maximum Resolution 1920x1200 / 1080p

Connector Types 1 - DVI-I Single Link Female

All those things in the quote = passive adapter.
