Post subject:  Crossfire original 5870 with a NEW 5870 Six Eyefinity

As my title suggests, any issues know with this combination of hardware?

I'm thinking about buying another 5870 for crossfire (Eyfinity enabled) and if it works i'll have 3Gig of memory rather than 2G if i use another standard 5870.

Will I see 3Gig or will the card down clock to 2G?

Can't see why not, but before I spend an extra 100 pounds, has anyone done it yet?

I'm not interested in using 6 screens, just want the extra video memory and I would load the new 5870 Six as the second card and stick with using DVI and DP on my original 5870.

Could be a good thing if it works. I think Eyefinity needs as much as possible.

IF they work together, they will share the VRAM in Xfire. Therefore, you will only have as much VRAM as the lower card. If the card with the lowest amount of VRAM on has 1GB, then 1GB is all you will get, even if you add a card with a gazillion GB.

Crossfiring a 1GB cad and another 1GB card does not equal 2GB of VRAM I'm afraid. Think of it as RAID1. Have a look at this thread for some more discussion on the subject.

However, you may want to get rid of your 1GB 5870 and buy the 6 version with 2GB on, but check out Ibrin's Review of the EyeFinity6 to see whether it will benefit you or not.

OH.

Thanks eZ, you just saved me 400 notes.lol

If I ever meet you, ill buy you a beer.

I'n that case, im better off buying a 5970 or sell my 5870 and by a 5870 Six Eyfinity to get the extra vram.

shame that.

Do you think its the vram thats realy required for eyefinity at max settings or the core Mhz ?

Thanks again.

The VRAM isn't really required for today's games. It will come into play more and more as DX10 and DX11 effects become more popular. You can check out the review. Bound to be something in there that is close to what you're playing. I tested the original 5870, the E6, E6 CFX and the 5970. Those four scores are right on each page in a nice little stat box for each game.

I would save your money and just buy a 2nd regular 5870. The extra 1gb ram hardly offers any more performance. There are a few reviews out there of the 2gb model. Anandtech's is nice: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3621/amds-radeon-hd-5870-eyefinity-6-edition-reviewed As you can see, the 2gb rarely helps.

Also, 2 5870's will be faster than a 5970. The clock speeds on the 5970 are slightly lower than the 5870, so you'll see a little better performance with a 2nd 5870.

You can check out my review for the comparison of the 1GB 5870, the E6, E6 CFX and the 5970. The 5970 would be close to 1GB 5870 CFX.
