I have 3 monitors but I'm using 2 video cards at the moment (Ati X1300 and ATI4890)
Thing is I have 1600x1200 - 1920x1200 - 1600x1200

Would it be worth getting a 5850 or 5870 card for this? Can I run lower resolutions?
I was thinking of
1152x864 - 1440x900 - 1152x864
Would games still accept that one monitor is a 'real' WS and the other 2 are actually just regular 4:3 monitors? or would the FOV be all out of wack?

There is absolutely no problem with your (potential) setup. Your "native" Eyefinity resolution will be 5120x1200. You will also get some resolutions that have the same aspect ratio. They are automatically set up by the CCC.

The games will see just one big resolution, and if they are Hor+ you will get the extra benefit just like all other Eyefinity setups. The game doesn't care whether you are using two 4x3 and one 16:10 or three 16:10 (or whatever), as they don't see it.

So yes, a 5870 would really be worth getting and yes, you get some intermediate resolution for very demanding games.

Remember that you need an active DP Adapter, too, if none of your displays offers an native Displayport.

Incorrect: Native Eyefinity Resolution will be 4800x1200. Eyefinity MUST pipe the same resolution and refresh rate to each display. Now in game where you can set the FOV, you will be fine, as you can just alter the FOV for your setup and it will look "correct." Albeit you will have the res stretch over the middle monitor. But for normal work, you can setup an extended desktop profile. Then toggle between them.

I think it is worth getting a 5870, the performance boost is good. I would recommended getting all the same monitors though. Like put your 1920x1200 monitor on top of 3 1600x1200.

Try setting 1600x1000 on the 4:3 monitors to see if they support that resolution. The picture will be distorted. But if that works, maybe you can run 4800x1000. That way, the picture on the center monitor, the most important one for gaming, will look right.

I definitely want the center monitor to have the best picture, this much is certain.
It's also not really practical for me to switch monitors unfortunately - for non eyefinity games, I want that Dell 24" (does have hdmi and displayport too)

Replacing the 2x20" would require I would guess 2x22" WS models - and they'd have to be 16:10 - not 16:9 - which is also becoming rare.
Anyone know if there's any way in the future ATI might make it so that 16:10 and 4:3 wouldn't be a problem?

Dells only 22" 16:10 models are TN panels - which I won't allow in my house, horrible things.
My only option really is to either put up with a weird FOV on the 20" displays or to bite the bullet and get a 27" Dell (16:9) and a 21.5" Dell (16:9) - all with IPS tech, I think.
That kind of sucks, since the 20" 4:3 is nearly as tall as the 24" 16:10 :( whereas a 27 vs 21.5" at the same aspect ratio will be significantly smaller.

Does this mean for non-gaming I can set up 2 1600x1200s and a 1920x1200 and get the full resolution on all of them? Can I do that with the 1920x1200 in the middle?

Or, can I get two 1600x1200s next to each other and a 1680x1050 on the side extended?

This is for non-gaming. I have a 5850, trying to figure out what to do with my monitors (and whether to buy a new monitor 1920x1200 or an active DisplayPort->VGA for the 1680x1050 I already have.)

Edit: put a second video card in (old nvidia card) and working with three monitors (extended desktop, not eyefinity) just fine. I can also put my two 1600x1200s in a 3200x1200 eyefinity group and extend to the other as a separate screen, too.

Was there any progress made regarding this issue?

Bezel compensation proves that the h res isnt set int stone, this seems to be a driver fix away, anyone managed to hex it in?
