Anyone have idea when this may be out! Sold my 5970 3 weeks ago and using 2x260gtx in the meantime. Person I am borrowing the 260's from needs them back on 1-1-2011. Gonna be tough to use a 250 gts as my main gpu until 6990 comes out!!

January is the announced timeframe. CES would be a good time for the reveal, especially if there is a surprise like support for 5 or 6 panels. I'd expect launch and sale to be sometime mid January.

Agreed with above. For 6990 you can count on something like 2x 6970 on 6950 clocks to stay within 300W TDP range.

Why not just get the 2 6950(70) now? Wont it be roughly the performance?
I've been reading about the 6990 and not clear on the advantages of it.

The advantage is always that it's all in one card.

With two GPU, does it still place itself in Crossfire mode or does it function more like a single card?

Well the 5970 was 2 x 5870's on one card but they were clocked down to 5850 speeds, and they basically did this to keep power consumption & heat issues in check.

So yes,if they do the same with 6990,then it should be 2 x 6970 clocked down to 6950 speeds.

And if they do this, then like you say 2 x 6950 will have very similar performance to 1 x 6990.

The reason a lot of people like the 5970 & 6990 is because its a 1 card solution, uses less power than 2 cards and also generates less heat.

The 5970 & 6990 are both deemed as crossfire, exactly the same as if you had 2 graphics cards in your system crossfired.

Biggest reason for me is that I use a 250gts for physx. Then I am still in a 2 card physical solution. Also the 5970 I had was 12 inches long and the 250 gts is like 8.5-9 inches long. The 5970 fan is totally exposed to get fresh air because it is so much longer than the 250gts. When you use 6950/6970 in xfire the top card does not get enough air. (my pcie slot have about 3/8 to 1/2 inch room between cards). Also to have physx then u need 3 gpu's.

Sold my 5970 3 weeks ago or so and I am using 2x260gtx in sli till I see the 6990 in action. I can see how much higher temp the top 260 gets to because it doesn't get as much air. I am using a haf 932 case btw.
