Well the issue they had with 3x1 P is that some games (source engine) would have the res, selectable, but since the initial startup would cut the menu, it was hard to select the res.
I found a work around where you could just go into windowed mode, select the res, the go back to fullscreen.
U2311H monitors are great, IPS panels, economical, and has good features.
Landscape, definitely immerses me much better than portrait. Portrait just gives you a bigger screen, and in your case a really big 16:10 screen.
Whether or not gold / silver / certified games will play in 3x1P, it's most likely, but a lot of games were not specifically tested for it.
I know Lost planet will work in 5040x1050, but not in 3150x1680, which is stupid. But it's an engine limitation as Lost Planet 2 wont do it either.
