Does every monitor alone work?
What happens when you use the other DVI port on the GPU ?

Totally sounds like a passive DP -> DVI adapter.

I would agree with Haldi, the DP-=>DVI Adapter looks and sounds like it behaves like a passive adapter.
You will require an active adapter to be able to enable more than 2 monitors at any one time.

I use one of these http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Produ ... =&sel=BACC.

Worked great on my HD5850 and now my 290 as well (and now that I have a 290 I should probably look at the back of my case...)

Oh thats a VGA adapter not a DVI.... Okay.

Well on the 290 you dont need the adapter anymore! This card supports 2x DVI and HDMI Nativ.
