Post subject:  Help with aspect ratio (16:10 and 16:9)

I'm not sure how to put my query into proper words. So I'll have a go with a description.

The next monitor I am thinking of getting is a 16:9 27" Iiyama B2712

However, previous monitors I've had are 22" 16:10 at the 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Can someone please tell what the difference are with 1920 x 1080 and 1920 x 1200 apart from 120px vertically (I've gathered that)?

Going from 1080 > 1200 - does this mean that I will see more "up and down" i.e. in game I can see someone in the window without me having to scroll up.

Going from 1680 > 1920, 240px - does this mean that I will see more wide field of view i.e. in game I can see a person (for example) without having to scroll sideways.

Thanks for any help.

:welcome
Unfortunately there is no stright answer, each game reacts differently, I would recommend checking out the comparison screenshots and the games list to see other detailed reports.

The reason for this is that some games scale to different ratios really well, where as others stretch to the required ratio.
Some games may draw the extra 'up&down' view, however others would scale the ratio to fill the screen so that even tho you have more 'up&down' you may not see any more of the map/enviroment, effectively the same image but at a higer resolution.

Bit like how a 2048x1152(16:9) display would effectively be showing the same enviroment as a 1920x1080(16:9) display, but just at a higer resolution making the enviroment more crisp in detail, rather than expanding the virtual viewable aera.

On the flip side, a 1920x1200(16:10) may end up displaying the same up&down viewable aera, but may in fact loose on width viewable aera when compared to say a 1920x1080(16:9).

Ultimately it really depends on the game in question.

Post subject:  Re: Help with aspect ratio (16:10 and 16:9)

Thank you for your reply.

I'm finding it difficult whether or not to go to 16:9 rather than 16:10 as most people (or what I have read under my own observations) seem to find 16:10 best.

I mean looking at those links (thank you) on COD4 16:10 compared to 16:9 it does look only more widescreen.

Been reading into alot of forums and such that there is so many conflicting arguements so I feel inclined just to buy 2 monitors of 16:9 and 16:10 to put them side to side so I can see the difference!

I mean I understand that the 1200 would be excellent in desktop apps like spreadsheet or programming so that it saves time scroling but as a gamer and "casual" office user, scrolling would not bother me that much (I'm used to it).

As I said I was looking at the 27" Iiyama, are there any other recommendations of which screen to get?
