I've been trying to sell my Gateway XHD3000 on Craigslist, but the thought just occurred to me: Why not just use it as a TV in the bedroom? It doesn't have a TV tuner. How do I do this? What hardware do I need?

Simple actualy. Get a Cable box that will out put in either Component or HDMI.

If it output in componant, get a Componant to VGA Box (less than $20).
If it outputs in HDMI, Get a HDMI to DVI adapter or Cable.

They do have some Composite to VGA adapters, but I don't recommended watching TV in SD on anything really.

The number one reason would be resolution. With all of the HD content being 720p/1080i/p you are scaling ALL of your video content upto 2560x1600.

The other reason is that 30" monitors are usually quite abit more expensive than an equal 32" TV, often in the range of a cheaper 37-42" TV. Though this 'problem' does not really relate to you considering that you already own the monitor. You could sell it off to finance a larger TV set though.

But aside from scaling there really is nothing wrong with it. And it all depends on how well the monitor handles the scaling.
But yeah all you need is a set top box. A TV's tuner functionality is useless once another box is handling the channel stuff.
