Today AMD lifted the embargo on information regarding the Radeon HD 7990 launch. Unfortunately we weren't able to secure a review sample prior to the launch, but have been assured that we will receive one shortly.

The card is basically 2x Radeon HD 7970 GHz Editions smooshed into one package. The card is clocked at base 950Hz, with a boost of 1GHz. It boasts 6GB of VRAM and five outputs (4x Mini-DP + 1DL-DVI). The card was also designed to be virtually silent, and clocks in quieter than a library. The card also comes with seven high-profile AAA games in the box, which can help reduce the pain of its $999 price tag.

After reading (more like studying) several reviews of this card and all the relevant micro-stuttering articles i must say that i am seriously interested in this card for my long desired 5x1P setup. But...for me it al depends on the new (miracle) catalyst driver that will counter the stutters.

BTW a MST hub is still needed to counter tearing due to the use of the DVI output combined with the 4 DP's, so only the DP's can be used? In that case it's probably even more cost effective to use 2 7970's and a MST hub. In Euro's 7990=1000, 7970=350, MST hub=100, do the maths.

I'm a bit behind the times, but doesn't both crossfire and SLI ignore the RAM on the second card? Meaning this card doesn't actually have 6GB of memory but only 3? Or have they fixed this?

You are almost right. This is 1 card with 2 GPU's. Both GPU's have 3GB of RAM each. The RAM is "mirrored" because 1 processes the even frames and the other the uneven frames, so the total usable RAM on the card for a game is only 3GB. Still enough for the games i know though

depends on the 7970. It's it's a 7970 with 1xDVI, 1xHDMI, 2xMiniDP, you'll need two MST Hubs to run 5x1 without tearing. HUBs (so far) only have 3 DP outputs, though in theory you could do 4 outputs off of one DP 1.2 and run 5x1 1080p, but the point of this card is that it allow 5 ultra high bandwidth connections for things like 5x1 120Hz and 5x1 2560x1600.

Offcourse you are quite right. And i would love to have used this new "official" 7990 if it had 5 dp's so i would be sure to have no tearing issues.
There is no doubt about its performance, even compared to the earlier released 7990 from Club3d and Powercolor, it rules in fps per watt (and temp) with high pixel count. And for the Asus Ares2... there are 2 available at this moment in the Netherlands and the cheapest is 300euro above the new 7990's I perhaps would consider buying 1 (because its so awsome) if it had at least 5 dp's

And for the 5x1 120Hz or 5x1 2560x1600, i would love to see a review about it but cant find 1 right now... are we in such a niche? Perhaps something for a WSGF review?

Yeah that really is a niche! The Problem would be to find a 120hz 2560x1440 Pixel Screen!
Looks like there are only 60hz Panel aviable, but with a right PCB you can overclock your Monitor to 120hz!

This two are the only i could find! And they both run via DVI and need special drivers!

And also, imagine what Hardware power you would need to run 7200x2560 Pixel! 2x/4x AA Maximum! More would kill the 3gb VRAM. And then you'd need Quadfire for sure to reach 120fps in High quality settings. (Except you'd play CS:S)

So at the Moment we can say 5x1P 120hz 2560x1440 is a Dream we won't reach this year.

Aand you can do that when offical HD 7990 hit shops. 330MHz pixel clock adapters, 4 is necessary 110Hz and right timings(Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)).

Or DP 1.2 MST hub and get full 120Hz. One monitor still use DVI. Patch drivers for pixel clock limit(toastyX). AMD Basic limit is 80Hz for 1440p.

I been running 4320x2560 almost year. I really need the update
