Since FSX is CPU limited then adding a newer card wouldn't help for performance. Obviously there is a better AF with 6xxx cards & Morphological AA.

that is not entirely true , once you go into eyefinity resolutions you see gfx limitations quite easily . FSX needs cpu power , but it needs gfx too , its about a 75%/25% split

In my experience, FSX didn't really like ATi cards too much. But that was back with a 4870X2, sooo... YMMV.

Yea, I am not looking not so much as in improvement in FPS, but more of any issues like texture tearing, stuttering, flashes, and severe drops in FPS while in the clouds... things like that. Especially Eyefinity issues as I will be going at least (3) 24" screens.

I'm trying to decide whether to go for a 5870 with 2GB now or wait to see if they come out next month with a 6980 with any improvements for flight simming. So I am trying to get any clues on performance by asking about the 6850's or 70's. So if anyone happens to be messing with with one, I would love to hear about it. :P

I heard the high end cards could be out by this year's end. Ah,... the waiting game.

Can you describe the system you are currently using? I am running FSX on the system below, pretty much maxed out, except 50%ish on traffic etc, and not experiencing these issues.

I'd say wait anyway since you have waited this long. In either case you will benefit from deals when retailers try to clear HD58xx series stock in anticipation of HD68xx, or get the HD68xx after more informed research and reviews.

the shader 3.0 mod helped quite a lot with the clouds on my 5850 , im with the same boat, if i find a good deal on a 2gb 5870 ill get that or get the fastest barts when it comes out. also current systems are already able to run stock fsx preety much maxed, but if you add lots of addons ala rex , utx , orbx , and some complex airplanes , the picture is a bit different

Hey B33 ENN,

I am in a "transition PC". I am using an Asus G73 laptop tied to a Hannspree 25" screen. Specs are:

Intel i7-720 (Quad running at stock 1.6GHz)
ATI 5870 w/1GB on board
8Gig of RAM
running at 1920x1080

So I am in the process of planning/building my new system. So far this is what I am considering:

AMD Phenom II 6-core (to be OC at 4.00GHz.)
ATI 5870 (2GB version) or AMD 6980 (2GB version if out by years end)
8GB DDR 3 1600 or 2000 (name brand yet to be determined)
ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler
COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case
(2) Western Digital VelociRaptor 600GB 10000 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
(1) Western Digital Caviar Black WD2001FASS 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive
1200 Watt PSU (don't know who yet)
(3) 24"-to-27" 1900x1200 screens (probably LED backlit but no namebrand decided yet).

Thinking about a SSD as I hear it helps in loading lots of textures but not sure the price/value is there yet.

I really only run FS9 (maxed out), but just for kicks I installed FSX on it to see how it would perform. I bought FSX the day it came out four years ago but have never really tried it after hearing about all the issues through the years. So I brushed off the cobwebs to see how this laptop would do. So with FSX, SP1 and Acceleration installed, I have settings pretty much in the middle, FPS locked at 20 and it seems to run fairly well at that. No AI aircraft though. It's default flight runs just fine at that. Gets into teens at KSAN, San Diego, CA.

So I may slowly transition to FSX after the build or just skip over it for MS Flight which will probably be out in a year. So I will probably wait to hear news on the higher 6000 boards. I guess I am waiting as I haven't bought anything yet, ha! But as noted, my main concern is how the new cards would hold up with FS9 and FSX as it is such old code.

So atf300 - obviously, with your mentioned addons you are clearly into flight simming. Are you saying with that mod, going through heavy clouds is not really an issue? Yes, I know there will be a framerate hit of some type but you're not going from say 40FPS down to single digits?
