In their defense, I am sure people can use the original as a basis for deciding if they want the very similar sequel.

was Terminator 3 as good as number 1 or 2 ?
was Settlers 4 or 5 as good as settlers 2 ?

I think you got the idea
if a demo is not provided at least provide a few days refunds...

Just release a demo when the game launches. Or say it plays the same as the last one.

This is a game, not a movie, and it is the same team, the same tech and the same design philosophy. That is pretty telling. I said "very similar" sequel for a reason.

I am not saying they shouldn't release a demo, I am saying I can see not needing one. I certainly don't.

Also, I don't know how Europe can have those return policies... you could just buy and return every game and play them all for free. How does that work?

the second one wasn't a movie...

there's no PC game return policy in europe most of the time
except for a handful of shops (not online)
and then it's a case by case basis and of course it depends on the amount of time you kept it, and how you present things too
(for example "I want my money back now bitch!" is probably not the best way to handle things ;) )
Actually most "physical" shops have a very limited PC collection of games due to online shops rising in power...

I just mentioned return policy because that's one of the things from the gamer's bill of rights, which have already been done. And it seems overall very few people really use this possibility when it's present... of course it is yet to be done on a major AAA big hit title...

I think at this point in time if you want to get an illegal version of a game you don't need a shop's services at all, so given that, I see no reason not to accept returns (except if there's a DRM limitation on the matter)

my cousin's girlfriend works in a shop and I sometimes "use her" as feedback to see when a game has problems or not, she knows it quite fast as customers go back to her shop ...
she's very cool and a gamer too,

Providing a demo nullifies one of the points many pirates try to use to justify their activities - the "I'm not paying $60 for a game only to find I don't like it!" justification. I'm not saying that that is a good justification - it isn't. But devs/pubs need to provide every reason for people not to pirate. But they aren't, they actually seem to be doing their best to encourage it.

...

You can't return PC games anywhere if they've been opened. This is particularly annoying as they are actually breaking the law - the EULA states that if you do not agree with said EULA, you can return the product for a full refund. However, you can't read the EULA until you've opened the box and put the disc in the computer. Which means you can't return it. Impressively, this means that these shops are breaking the law, but no one seems to ever bring this up. (I did bring this up, once, loudly, in a packed GAME store pre-Christmas. I've never seen the manager of one of those stores move so fast in my life...) PC games (and most PC software) seem to be the one type of item for sale, where pretty much all of the various consumer-supporting laws are just... forgotten. Or ignored. I'm not sure which is worse.

Console games, on the other hand, are not so hampered. I've got a couple of console-gamer friends who buy new games on release day, play them for a few days (which is usually enough to complete the game at least once, unless it's a JRPG) then take them back for a refund. One of them must have a hundred games on his 360 gamertag that he hasn't owned for more than four days.

Actually, since the stores didn't write the EULA - they can't be bound by it. If the EULA does say you can return the game, and you want to, you should bring it up with the publisher. If they refuse, then they are breaking the law.

Well it fails at multi-monitor res, just like CoD4

And it fails at match making... I just missed the screenie but I did a quick MP join to check it out (can't play til tonight) and I started a match which had 4v4.... IWNet put the four guys who were privates on one team the the ones which were all at least rank 8 on the other!

FAIL

At least cos it is STEAM you don't have to put the disk in!

Although I dunno if you can sell it... I have sold Dark Messiah after it attached itself to steam... I can still play DM on steam even though I sold the disk! Naughty I know but it wasn't my plan.....
