So that limits my choices somewhat in a monitor at 1680x1050 with display port:

Dell P2210 Pro

Your options would be something like

1) [1680 x 1050 20.1"] + [1680 x 1050 22"] + [1680 x 1050 20.1"] This would look ok the aspect ratio would be fine and you would have a slightly bigger central display. The Dell P2210 would be fine + 2 Dell 2007WPF.

2) [1680 x 1050 20.1"] + [1920 x 1200 24"] + [1680 x 1050 20.1"] The aspect ratios match so it would look ok but the centre monitor would be quite a bit bigger. Would possibly look bad. Your options for 24" 16:10 with Displayport are slim and expensive so would be better off using an active adapter.

3) Sell the Dell 2007WPF and go for 3 x 22" monitors. Dell P2210 + 2 cheap TN based DVI monitors. I would go for this option the cost wouldn't be much more than using the 20.1" because the price difference is small between 20.1 and 22". The satellite monitors wouldn't need to be the best something like http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159417. This combination would provide the best experience.

With 1 and 2 you would have problems with Bezel compensation.

I'm using the P2210 for one of my side monitors and it's working great. (see sig for details)

Cost is a concern which is why the 2007 is being "recycled" as I will be building a new rig as part of the over all cost.

I could slum it for a while maybe with 2 x 22" and the 20.5" and then replace it later on in the year... but it does have a lovely IPS panel!

I've just been reading about the DP-VGA adaptors so now I'm considering getting another 2 Dell 2007WFP's.

From what I understand the VGA adaptor doesn't necessarily allow the same picture quality that you get from a digital signal so it would make sense to use this on one of the side monitors correct?

So DP-VGA + 3 x 2007WPF's + 5850 should make for a good setup with little to no problems.

The advantage of this is that 1 display port monitor is about the same as 2 second hand monitors and the 2007's are nice IPS panels.

I am missing anything as this seems too simple a plan to work!?

Sounds a good plan.

VGA is "inferior" to DVI/DisP in that is requires signal conversion from digital (in the graphics card) to analog (signal cable) back to digital again (in the screen). Having said that, I can't tell the difference between VGA and HDMI on my HDTV... except that VGA just works, while HDMI requires lots of faffing around to get it not to overscan like mad.

I have the monitors and the HP DP->VGA adaptor. I'm awaiting another DVI cable before I can set up eyefinity but it all looks promising so far.

One snag I hit was when testing the monitors on a standard DVI->VGA adapter I could not get the native resolution for the monitor (seems to be an issue with Win 7, EDID and VGA). Using the HP adaptor though causes no problems.
