The 1:1 option with an nvidia card is not dependant on your monitor as far as I've seen. ATI CCC only supports video scaling on their high-end cards.

I had this exact problem. I too have a FPD2185; it supports all types of video scaling but I doubt your ATI card has the option. Nvidia cards offer fixed aspect ratio scaling and centered output; both being great for different games. And as a bonus they allow custom resolutions and timeings. My My brand-new Gforce 6600 supports it perfectly on the 2185.

So, in short; no, the 1:1 option does not depend on your monitor; the video adjust menu is only designed for non-computer inputs only; I, forthe life of me, could not find a hack for the 1:1 option; and 1:1 or centered output works great on the Gateway 2185.

Crap.

So what's an Nvidia card that's equivilant to (or better than) the Radeon 9800 that comes in the normal PCI variety (not Express) and supports 1:1? I'm not ready to spring for a new motherboard quite yet.

I think you refering to the AGP bus. The regular PCI bus won´t give you any graphics performance.

Take a look at this thread. It will give you an overview.

Nvidia drivers can do aspect scaling but not ATI, so if your monitor doesn´t support it you should go with nvidia.

When it comes to graphics.
PCI < AGP < PCIe.

Yes, I agreee with BongoTrumman. Newer cards such as the 9800 are rarely made in the PCI catagory. AGP and PCI-E are far more common. If you really do have no PCI-E or AGP slots on your motherboard, you might have to seriously consider getting a new one.

But, If you do have an AGP or PCI-E slot the AIT 9800 equivilant is probably the GeForce 6600GT , but you might steping it up a little with the GeForce 6800GS. Both support 1:1.

Yes, I meant AGP. I think I'll make the switch/upgrade. The best AGP I could find on Newegg is the 7800 for $299.

I'm guessing that supports 1:1 as well, right?

What about games that force resolutions? Do you just have to set the resolution with 1:1 fixed aspect before you start the game?

Yes, the 7800 series is the best nvidia makes. And it supports 1:1.

Games that force resolutions, like Diablo II or Warcraft III, will strech to fill the screen but maintain their aspect ratio in the fixed aspect ratio scaling mode. If you want to maintain the true resolution their is the centered output option.

So, If the game runs at 800x600, in 1:1 mode it will strech to 1050x788 (im guessing your running 1680x1050); in centered output it will stay 800x600.

hello everyone :)

I have an HP Pavilion ZV6000 laptop with Radeon Xpress 200M. I like to play old adventure games like Gabriel Knight, the Monkey Island series or The Longest Journey for example. They naturally come in 4:3 aspect ratio so, after reading this thread, I know I'm not really able to play them fullscreen without being horizontaly streched. However I wouldn't mind playing them with small bars on bottom and top of the screen as long as the aspect ratio is maintained. The problem is that the original resolutions of most these games are really small, like 640x480. When I change the Full Panel Size option to Use Centered Timings in Catalyst Control Center the size of the game screen naturaly won't change at all and stay 640x480 despite my enabling the fullscreen option. What I would like to do is to scale the game screen to 1024x768 res which is supported by the videocard/screen, athough it leaves small bars on top and bottom, and naturaly maintain teh aspect ratio. Is there any software that will enable me to do it? :(

cheshire, you can get black bars to the left and right on your monitor to give you a 4:3 format you can use in-game and have a real 800x600 without any strething using powerstrip. There are some people here who have done it and posted how they did it.

There should be an easier way.

Right click in you desktop>Properties>Settings>Advanced>Displays>Click on the Panel Display and make sure "Scale Images to Panel Size" is UNCHECKED. (I think I got the steps right)

If that doesnt work, Use Powerstrip.
