http://www.amazon.com/Mini-DisplayPort-HDMI-Adapter-Support/dp/B004OAQDFS/ref=sr_1_14?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1331680873&sr=8-14

All the adapter on amazon say for macbook, but will it also work with my 7970?
I assume it will, but just want to double check.

I have 3 displays in eyefinity right now and am looking to use this to run a 4th independent display off the same gpu.

I do not know; however, AMD has a list of certified dongles. Here is the link:

http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx

I have read some reviews that indicate certain adapters designed for Apple may not work with other equipment.

Yea, I didn't have any luck getting Apple's miniDP->DVI working, I doubt their mDP->HDMI would work either. Their mDP->VGA works like a charm though.

Can I get away with a passive adapter or do I need active? Iv herd different people say different things in relation to the 79xx cards and what adapters can be used. right now im using One DVI cable, one Hdmi to DVI adapter, one mini dp to DVI adapter "which came with my Asus 7970", so i don't know if its active or not.

The adapter needs to be a single-link active adapter.
