I've found out that selecting a widescreen resolution actually gives you a SMALLER viewing area. Not a single degree of horizontal FOV is gained, and a few degrees of vertical FOV are lost. I can provide screenshots if necessary.

I believe that many game with widescreen option turn on has the same problem.

Really? Maybe it might be a good idea to compile a list of games that have that problem. I'd say it's at least as bad a problem as stretching.

I just found out that Half-Life via Steam has this problem too. I really hope that Half-Life 2 has proper widescreen support.

HL2 has a real WS support, but as killercheung says, many games has a "bad" WS support like all game based on the Unreal Engine (expect the UT2004 engine) like Postal 2, XIII, Amercian Army 2, etc...

but this FOV Hack from Racer_S is very cool !
