Alright, here's the scoop and a little background.
I came from a 19" CRT run by an x800 Pro O/C'd a bit to XT PE levels. Previously, I ran BF2 at 1280x1024, 2xAA and FRAPS records a relatively constant 100 FPS (I believe BF2 caps FPS at 100, just like 1942) with v-sync off. Everything is fine and well, no performance issues.
Then, I get a VA1912wb and hook it up. So I'm running the native 1440x900 @ 60Hz, and do the command line stuff to change the resolution to match the native res. BF2 launches fine, is using the widescreen res, mind you no FOV fix, but I don't care really. (I'd like it, but I like the game more, so it won't prevent me from playing)
Here's the issue: At first, I didn't force v-sync, and my video card was still pushing 100+ FPS. When on the ground, I'd have some visual tearing, not terrible, but annoying. In the sky however, I'd get AWFUL tearing, to the point that I could barely play the game, still pushing 100+ FPS. So, I go into the CCC, force v-sync on all the time, and go back to BF2. So BF2 syncs at 60Hz and gameplay is still fine. The problem comes in when FPS dips below 60... if it gets to around 45 FPS or so, it seems to re-sync at 30. It'll stay at 30 for up to 10-15 seconds, then re-sync back to 60 FPS. When it's at 30, it becomes very noticable. 60 fps is fine for normal gameplay, 30 sucks. But for some reason, forcing v-sync On often causes the game to sync down to 30.
Is there any reason why? Is there some setting I need to change? Why is the game (or my video card?) syncing down to 30 FPS when the frequency isn't changing? And it's not that my FPS is dipping that low, I know the card can handle a constant 100+, it's that it is specifically sync'ing that low. It stays at 30 constantly for 5-15 seconds, which even if it dipped down that low, it wouldn't stay at exactly 30, it'd fluxuate... 30, 29, 32, etc.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Oh, and just for reference, I tried the same res, same AA, same Hz, v-sync on with Oblivion, Civ4, Black&White2, and they all sync properly to 60 FPS, never dip down and stick at 30 like BF2. So, I know it's BF2 doing this.
