Read Full Detailed Report - Sins of a Solar Empire

Sins of a Solar Empire is a science fiction real-time strategy computer game developed by Ironclad Games and published by Stardock Entertainment for Microsoft Windows operating systems. Sins is a real-time strategy (RTS) game that incorporates some elements from 4X strategy games; promotional materials describe it as "RT4X." The game was released on February 4, 2008, its first content expansion titled Entrenchment was released as a download on February 25, 2009, and its second content expansion titled Diplomacy was released as a download on February 9, 2010. A package that combines the original game with the two expansions was released at that time with the name Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity.

The playing field is a 3D web of planets and other celestial objects in the orbital plane of one or more stars. It features a sandbox mode, allowing the player to choose different types of solar systems to unlock achievements. Players can conquer neighboring planets and explore distant star systems in a "massively scaled, fully 3D environment featuring entire galaxies, orbiting planets, clusters of asteroids, space dust and radiant stars." Notably, there is no single-player campaign mode, but games can be played against opponents offline and other players online.

It's amazing how close the companies are getting... And not getting it right.

The multi-player works exactly the same since it uses the same settings. Single-player is also basically just multi-player with bots. ;)

The game lists 1680x1050 for me as a selectable resolution. 1280x720 isn't listed, though, since it's below the minimum 1024x768 resolution.

The game gets the resolutions your monitor supports as well as any custom resolution you add. These resolutions are listed in my game settings:

1024x768
1280x960
1280x1024
1440x900
1600x900
1600x1000
1680x946
1680x1050
1920x1080
1920x1200

Any resolution that's not listed in the game can be set inside the settings file.

This is distressing as 1680x1050 is available on my desktop.

Even more so since now at 1920x1200 I am also getting the no-intro black screen.

Reinstall.

Okay 1680x1050 has been confirmed. The game has to start with an acceptable refresh rate for that resolution to be available in the list.

The non-native method does appear to break the intro for all resolutions.

Since 1280x720 isn't supported natively and it causes a number of problems, whereas every other resolution *is* supported natively and doesn't cause these problems, we should consider 1280x720 to be unsupported. The method can be a side-note in the DR, but we shouldn't endorse it in the "official" solution, which would be "native."

I'm assuming the game has no anomalies that affect 1280x768 and bigger?

Grade: B
CCE: 100%

Flaws:
1280x720 isn't supported
Windowboxed FMVs

Correct.

Reworded DR to update for optional method.

I would just mention in the method section that 1280x720 causes some extra problems.

The game has problems with non-native resolutions.

1280x720 will display a fixed screen when the game is started. The screen will stay like this until the "Esc" key is pressed three times. The game will then skip the intro and go to the title screen where it is playable.

1280x720

The game has a minimum resolution requirement of 1024x768 which affects the 1280x720 resolution. Some HUD elements will be cropped but the game remains playable.

Reworded method. Cleaned up the anomaly section. Tweaked the flaw summary.
