Hi guys n gals

i have a weird problem with my gigabyte 9800gt oc 1gb

If i play gta 4 at 5040x1050 high/very high (20-25fps) the temp readings from rivatuner goes from idle 45c to 138c YES thats right 138c after 10-15 min gameplay then it crashes

then i tested it at a lower res 1440x900 same settings and it hovers around 65-70c after 30 min of gameplay

The fan is a zalman fan which is always at 100% speed thats why idle is so cool and my psu is coolermaster 650w which is plently

Anyone have any ideas as to why the temps DOUBLE to 138c if i play at 5040x1050???

can someone please do a similar test at different resolutions and report their gpu temps

thanks

update: i just played 1 hour of stalker clear sky at 5040x1050 high settings and rivatuner was hitting 63c max 0_0. I just don't get it, why would GTA4 be a difference???

That's a dramatic increase indeed, but consider this.

1) 3x1440x900 = 4320x900 = 3.888.000 pixels
3x1680x1050 = 5040x1050 = 5.292.000 pixels; that's 36% more. (Maybe I got you wrong and you're really comparing 5040 to 1440x900... in this case 5040 is four times more pixels!) Which means the same amount of additional "work" from your graphics card. And temps may easily rise faster than that. Should the airflow in your computer case not be optimal, temps will rise even faster...
2)Zalman GPU fans are primarily designed for silence at stock speeds, not extreme cooling performance. Which is what you need to push an o/c'ed card to its limits i.e play a recent game at extreme resolutions.

TH gaming is serious gaming, and that calls for serious airflow ;)

Check your VRAM heatsinks, maybe a couple have fallen off. It's likely that at the max res it's utilising most of the 1GB of VRAM so they're heating up.

the 9800GT is not the hottest card out there, but I wasn't suprised to be very honest. I've seen 90C on my resolution (1680x1050) your pushing tons of data through your card. Motherboard/CPU/Northbridge and GPU are all going to heat up...you need mass airflow.

Which leads meto this.
What case do you have?
Also...you might have to opt out of a silent factor for more performance.

thanks for the quick replies

um my gigabyte 9800gt oc 1gb doesn't have any heatsinks on the vrams lol however if u read my update, it makes no sense...unless gta4 takes up more vram at 5040x1050

could it be 1 bad ram chip? it has 8 i think, but then again rivatuner is monitoring the core temp? not the vram temp?

I have a thermaltake m9 case hehe I have 2x12mm + 2x8mm fans 1 which is blowing the graphics card so i don't think it's an airflow issue.

update: i just played 1 hour of stalker clear sky at 5040x1050 high settings and rivatuner was hitting 63c max 0_0. I just don't get it, why would GTA4 be a difference???

Can someone please do a 20min test with gta4 and temps at 5040x1050 high/very settings and at 1440x900 then monitor the temp differences.

thanks

update 2: just played 1 hour of left 4 dead at 5040x1050 and max temp was 63c o_0 DAMN U GTA4 ><

further testing has revealed that playing combat arms at 4320x900 works fine at stable 65c but once i switch to 5040x1050 it keeps rising temps until it hits 138c then crashes lol!

u guys think it could be beucase of the new gxm or nvidia drivers? I'm using 181.2 vista 32 latest gxm???

I'd try manually setting the card fans to 100% using RivaTuner. See if that fixes the overheating issue.

i thought i posted an update but it's not here? lol?

anywayz

it turns out that it was the stupiod nvidia 181.22 drivers on vista.

If i play the same game same res same everything under xp with older drivers it works and stays around 56-60c :)

something must be wrong with the 181.22 drivers + my gigabyte 9800gt oc 1gb edition ;/
