Hi,

I'm not lazy, done a lot of research - have become frustrated trying to decide which nVidia card to upgrade from my current GTX260.

Since adding a THTGO digital and (3) 24" Samsung 240 monitors (5040x1050), I've noticed quite a frame rate hit in rFactor and GTR2.

Instead of lowering graphics setting, I'm ready to buy a new vid card but have gotten pretty confused trying to decide between a GTX275, 280 or 285 (a 295 is out of my price range).

Also, I don't want to spend $300 plus to find the new card doesn't give a noticeable imporvment in FPS over my current GTX260.

I'd appreciate any advice / info, my system is outlined below.

THANKS ! :D

Vista 64, Intel I7 920, Asus P6T MB, 6 Gb DDR3, Sigma 850w PS, 2x WD 640 Black, GeForce GTX260

Hrm? It's specialized in TH benchmarks.

I myself need a upgrade in GFX cards. Im going to wait till the 300 series to come out and not purchase till then. You might want to do the same.

The other option is to get a second 260 and wait till the 300 series cards come down in price. But at any rate...2 260 in sli will help till then.

you might want a more than 1GB card in any case because of the increased memory requirements for such a resolution

it's all visible in the WSGF reviews though ;)

The only thing I'd remotely suggest is just SLI another GTX260. It makes no sense to go from GTX260 to another 200-series card at the moment. Wait for 300-series in the fall/winter imho. Lack of patience now will make you regret not waiting for a significant upgrade when the 300-series is out.

well seeing how badly a GTX295 scale in 5040x1050 in some WSGF reviews I would not recommend SLI myself but then it depends on games & settings

Hi

I'm using a GTX 285 stock speed.
E8400 at 4.0GHz (445x9)
8GB (overkill) underclocked@890, but running at cas4 instead of cas5.
Vista x64.
I have to run 4320x900. I was unable to get my monitors to run at 57Hz.
I was a little lazy and didn't put too much effort into trying harder to find a solution.

In my driver I have vsync forced on, since I use TrackIR. I get tearing with it off. However, I have ran rFactor with it off a good bit, experimenting with control input at higher frame rates compared to locked at 60
I am able to run it with everything full at well over 100fps. I don't remember exactly how high they go, but do recall seeing 135fps before.
The controls refresh at 100Hz, so I was only concerned that I was at or above 100. I wasn't looking for max frame rates when doing these experiments. I was using 17 AI cars for these test. I know this because I really only race online and just have 17 AI cars set in the menu, where it always stays at that.

If I had some time to setup my wheel, etc. I would do some test and post the results for you. Unfortunately, I won't be playing until later in the week to prepare for my next race :(

Anyway. A GTX 285 is running my games beautifully. Only Crysis and FSX need cut backs to run smooth. I run all of them at 4320x900.
I would think for rF and GTR2 you will be fine with this card at 5040x1050.
I'm fairly certain you will see quite a difference over the 260 you are now using.

BHawthorne's is also an option you may want to consider. If release of the new line is coming soon, it may be better to wait.

I don't personally like SLI/Crossfire, due to certain issues there.

Hope this helps :)

Butch,

What you said above got me to thinking about my lower frame rate issue, so I did some testing of my own -

Using Vsync I got the same 60 FPS with smooth motion under all circumstances (with 5040x1050, AA level 4, 22 cars, ALL options on highest except texture filter x4 & shadows on full instead of max) in most mods.

W/ Vsynx off in most mods I get 75+ FPS with frequent high FPS of 100 to 125.

I have come to the conclusion (dah) that the good mods themselves contribute to high FPS and great sim racing while some mods & tracks give low FPS no matter what / how you adjust settings.

It's surprising that some of the better detailed mods and tracks yield higher FPS !

Thanks for your reply above, it helped me discover that most of my favorite rFactor mods (NAGT, BMW E90, EOAA, ILMS, MMG F1) run really well with my current GTX260 and THTGO at 5040x1050.

THANKS again :D
