Dear Customer,
Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200241085]} has been reviewed and updated.
Response and Service Request History:
Yes, you are correct, there is no way some one with three monitors with dvi only ports on them can use eyefinity for a tri monitor set up. The display port to display port is required.
In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.
Best regards,
AMD Global Customer Care

The words I want to use after reading that are censored here.

...the next word I want to use after that is, "Why?"

I see no reason why it should require DP->DP with no adaptors... :(

OK, I'm now running into conflicting information as to this particular adapter.

I trust Monoprice for information as they know what they're talking about with their cables. It's clearly stating on the Monoprice site that your particular displayport-to-dvi adapter is a (single-link) passive adapter.

Pay particular attention to the 3 adapters at the bottom of this link:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428

This particular quote is the one that bothers me:
Note: This is a passive adapter. While DisplayPort connectors are capable of passing a DVI signal, DisplayPort and DVI signals are basically different and not compatible with each other. This adapter does not actively convert a DisplayPort signal into a DVI signal. In order for this adapter to function properly, you must have a DisplayPort source device capable of producing and passing out a DVI signal through the DisplayPort jack.

Dell is having a monitor sale at the moment.

Just ordered a P2210 with Displayport with $30 off + free shipping.

Was right around $200.

Should mate with my other Dell 22's ok with height adjust.

I guess I just got a spare DVI monitor.

Yeah the Dell P2210 seems to be the cheapest option when looking for a replacement 22-incher with Displayport connection. Not that I feel very comfortable having an "odd" centre-screen different than the two others...

I find it a little weird that none of the reviews so far have even mentioned something about this. Personally Eyefinity was the sole reason for getting one of the new 5800 series cards. Right now it seems like you´d get more for your money just buying a high-end 4800 series card when they start dumping those at a discount instead of getting new screens just for the Displayport.

This is real bad, I reckon an active adaptor would work. It says so at the bottom of one of their charts. Only way to find out is for someone to buy one.

Glad I waited before purchase for once.... 3xDVI monitors!

EDIT: just had a look for DP monitors here in NZ. Can only find the dell which is about twice the average 24" price.

A few things I'd like to see clarified.

1) If this is going to require an active transcoder/converter box, which ones are available and which ones have they used? We know for a fact that they used at least 1 at the EyeFinity unveiling.

2) Will the $99 Apple mini-dp to dual-dvi converter work?

3) Is this only an issue of the regular port out configuration card, or will this also effect the 6 port mini-dp card too?

4) If this is the case --- explain WHY this is required and the reason why the 5000-series was not designed to use passive adapter? There is no installed DisplayPort userbase out there in the surround-gaming community.

Remind them that this is not just being requested by you but there are a large quantity of people that want to know this information on the forums.

Here is my beef in all of this. The only real reason why EyeFinity is attractive is to remove the cost of a box between the card and the display (TH2G). If we're forced to use multiple active converters and not be able to use passive adapters there goes 90% of the reason to even bother with this tech.

Who is this catering to? Our current userbase is all DVI and HDMI based displays and projectors. Seriously, who in here has a displayport enabled triple-display setup just sitting around already for this?
[/rant]
